Question

Haley Inman asks:

This is actually a sociology question -- I have an exam tomorrow and surprisingly information on the Culture of Poverty theory is not outlined in my text, the professor did a shotty job at discussing it in class...and google doesnt give me what im looking for. What i need to know are what the strengths and weaknesses of the theory are... I know that a weakness is that culture is a hard thing to measure and that it is easy to perpetuate and project stereotypes onto those typically in poverty but I haven't been able to find any strengths. Any help?

Your Answers

One weakness of the theory would be the individuals that succeed, despite their upbringing in a poverty stricken culture i.e. Oprah, Madonna, Halle Berry, Andrew Carnegie, Benjamin Franklin, Tom Cruise, John D. Rockefeller, Elvis, etc. etc.
